Quality professionals in DE&S are associated with governance, assurance and improvement, as defined by the Chartered Quality Institute, either managing or facilitating as required. They are split into two groups: Quality Management, which is concerned with quality within acquisition teams; and Government Quality Assurance, which is concerned with the quality of products and services supplied to DE&S by its suppliers.

About the roles

Those involved with Quality Management will facilitate and manage work to define processes that allow DE&S project teams to deliver to their customers in the wider MOD to the requirements specified, recognising Departmental and legislative constraints. They also work actively to see that processes are delivering the desired outcomes and facilitating the identification and improvement of those processes.

Those involved with Government Quality Assurance (GQA) are responsible for providing the assurance within an acquisition cycle that a product or service will be fit-for-purpose and that the supplier provides what is required. The GQA practitioner also provides governance through tools and techniques to mitigate quality risks. Specific activities include: planning for quality, defining contractual quality requirements, selecting suppliers, managing quality requirements in contracts, quality delivery, and continual improvement through the application of lessons learnt.

About the projects

Defence Equipment & Support is the part of the MOD responsible for equipping and supporting the UK's Armed Forces for current and future operations. Employing approximately 17,400 people, with a budget of some £14 billion, DE&S acquire and support a wide range of equipment and services, including ships, from aircraft carriers to inflatable landing craft, submarines, aircraft and helicopters, vehicles, weapons, software and avionics, clothing, food, medical equipment, packaging and information services. The majority of Quality posts are located at the DE&S Headquarters in Abbey Wood in Bristol, but are also spread throughout the UK, from Scotland to Plymouth and Northern Ireland to Kent.

Qualities / qualifications required

DE&S seeks self-motivated, forward-thinking people who communicate well at all levels, attend to detail, and are able to identify and mitigate risk. Quality Practitioner roles are available throughout the Civil Service grade structure, and qualifications required are dependant on entry level, but range from 5 GCSEs (A*-C to include mathematics and English) or a NQF/QCF Level 2 qualification for a Band D, to NQF/QCF Level 7 Qualification level for a Band B. All will require a qualification in a technical or science subject. Quality experience will be beneficial, as will a technical or engineering background as many positions involve an understanding of the product or service to be acquired.

Training and development

DE&S encourages all Quality practitioners to become registered with the Chartered Quality Institute at the appropriate level and provides training and development opportunities to enable this to be achieved.

Any specific application information

As many posts are located throughout the UK, applicants should state their location preference(s) and any willingness to relocate. CVs should show any technical, engineering or Quality experience.
