The DE&S Information function encompasses a wide range of IT and Information Management roles to support a large and diverse group of projects.

In the main, the range of projects cover the acquisition and in-service support of equipment used by the Royal Navy, the Army and the Royal Air Force, as well as the corporate and functional applications that support them.

About the role

We require a variety of skilled professionals including (but not limited to):

  • Architects
  • Service Managers and Service Integrators
  • Knowledge and Information Managers
  • Business Analysts and Business Relationship Managers

You will work in multi-functional project teams alongside project managers, engineers, supply chain experts and the like. Your team leader, your colleague or your junior could be military or civilian.

You might be responsible for developing, maintaining and governing ICT architecture across the organisation, or you might manage the delivery and integration of services, often provided by external suppliers. You could interpret customers' business requirements and ensure these are reflected in system development so operational needs are met at all times. As a knowledge or information manager, you might be working on systems that ensure information is protected and be responsible for developing these and other secure measures within your team. Alternatively you might be advising your Senior Information Officer on risk and helping to develop information skills within your team.

About the projects

We run large and diverse projects covering the systems and operational requirements of the Armed Forces or the corporate and functional applications that support them. We operate in an environment where the changing face of Government IT is moving towards the digital age. Working with industry partners and other Government departments you will help DE&S deliver its projects on time and help to overcome the unique challenges faced by us in Defence acquisition.

Qualities/Qualifications required

We are seeking people with good transferable skills from other industries, as well as experienced candidates with deeper experience of operating in particular Defence domains.

We are particularly interested to hear from the following types of people:

  • People with transferable skills from other business sectors.
  • Security cleared people who are already working within the Defence sector and/or those who have current security clearances.
  • Military people who are in the process of leaving the military or have previously worked in our Armed Forces.
  • Recent Graduates, as our entry level roles are particularly suited to recent graduates who would like to move directly into a career in Defence or Government Information.

We particularly (but not exclusively) recognise people who can express their skills against Skills For the Information Age (SFIA) or CILIP knowledge and skills competence sets. You will normally see these competences mentioned in particular job advertisements and role descriptions along with personal competence requirements.

Training and development

You will become a Government IT or Information Professional with the opportunity to develop your skills and abilities by taking advantage of comprehensive and accredited training and education packages. You will be encouraged to undertake continuous professional development and will enjoy support to join BCS – the Chartered Institute for IT, the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP), and other professional bodies.

You can also expect support with your personal development through a variety of means: formal training and education, mentoring, secondment, etc.

There are exciting opportunities for career development, and those showing potential can expect progression in a relatively short timeframe.
